How does the prompt library work?

Save any prompt to your library and reuse it on every model. Why people move a conversation mid-thread

Four reasons come up again and again: a usage limit on one plan, a refusal or a knowledge cutoff on a question the other model can answer, a second opinion on work that matters, and a subscription switch. In every case the expensive part is not the new model, it is re-explaining everything from scratch. The methods below are ordered by how much of the context survives.

The three manual methods

Copy and paste the thread

Select the conversation, paste it into a new Claude chat, and ask Claude to continue. It works for short threads. Long ones lose formatting, hit paste limits, and arrive as a wall of text Claude has to re-read on every turn.

What it loses: Formatting, code blocks, and your patience on anything over a few thousand words.

Ask ChatGPT for a handoff summary

Before you leave, ask for a summary in a fixed shape: goal, decisions made, open questions, constraints, next step. Paste that into Claude. This is the best manual method and worth saving as a prompt.

What it loses: Everything the summary left out. Summaries are lossy by design; the specific wording of an earlier answer is usually what you needed.

Export your ChatGPT data

Settings, Data controls, Export. You get a zip with a JSON of every conversation, by email, some minutes later. Open the JSON, find the thread, paste it. Tools that import the export into Claude move memory and preferences, not a live conversation.

What it loses: Time. The export is for archiving, not for switching models mid-task.

What arrives on the Claude side

A new Claude chat with the conversation attached and a note that it came from ChatGPT. Claude reads the attachment like any document, so your first message can be as short as "continue". What does not travel: ChatGPT's memory, custom instructions, and files you uploaded inside ChatGPT. Those are features of the source site, not parts of the conversation. Sortbase also files the original, so the ChatGPT version stays searchable in the same folder.

The other directions

The same button works from Claude to ChatGPT (the most common direction when Claude reports a usage limit), from either to Gemini, and to Grok.
